Ivacaftor Study

What does the study involve?

If you agree to take part, your participation will last approximately 4 months and will involve one screening visit and four to six study visits to the CTRC at CHOP.

Screening visit/Study visit 1:

  • Medical history
  • Brief Physical Exam
  • Weight and Height measurement
  • Urine Pregnancy test for females
  • Blood draw
  • Oral glucose tolerance test (unless done within 4 months prior to starting Ivacaftor). This test can also be done locally.

If you qualify based on your screening visit, we will ask you to fast overnight and come back for your first study visit the following morning. You may also choose to stay overnight at the CTRC. Each study visit will take about 5 hours to complete.

Study Visit 2:

  • Mixed meal tolerance test (MMTT) with blood draws

Study Visit 3:

  • Glucose potentiated arginine (GPA) test (this will measure the insulin and other glucose controlling hormones in your body)

Study Visit 4 (4 months):

  • Medical history
  • Brief Physical Exam
  • Weight and Height measurement
  • Urine Pregnancy test for females
  • Blood draw
  • Oral glucose tolerance test (does not have to be repeated if done locally within 2 weeks of the 4 month follow-up visit)

Study Visit 5:

  • Mixed meal tolerance test (MMTT)
  • Blood draws

Study Visit 6:

  • Glucose potentiated arginine (GPA) test (this will measure the insulin and other glucose controlling hormones in your body)

All clinically relevant results will be shared with you and, if you give us permission, your/ your child’s CF doctor.
